The theme of the fifth issue of our weird fiction magazine Phobos is “The Uncanny States of America,” so we’re looking for stories of the fantastic that are both set in America and could only be set in America. Any era (including the future) is fair game. You are at liberty to draw upon real events and figures or to completely invent people and places, your setting can be as iconic or obscure as best suits your story, your tone can channel the America of Ray Bradbury or H.P. Lovecraft, Shirley Jackson or Steven King.
We’re looking for a dozen original pieces of mostly prose but poems are welcome, any length up to two thousand words. Submissions are welcome from anyone, anywhere, and we’re interested in work from outside the USA.
We pay 8 cents a word or $25, whichever is greater, plus a print copy of the magazine. We use a standard writers contract in which the rights to your story revert to you after one year, though we retain the right to anthologize or republish your work in perpetuity. If you'd like to read it first, drop us a note and we'll send it over.
If you'd like feedback in the event we pass on your work, please say so in your submission email.
Open from March 1st to July 31st, 2026
